What it’s referring to is naturally occurring elements. In 5e, elemental damage isn’t really a thing, it’s more of a category. Now I’ll admit, it may be a more important remnant of older editions of the game, most of my knowledge comes from 5e, so keep that in mind. I’ve been asked a couple of times specifically about elemental damage in 5e.
